A hard drive is a storage unit where we can keep our files stored. Being a non-volatile storage unit means that it can store the data inside even when it is not connected to power. 'Hard drive' has become a generic term, since originally storage devices with hard disks were called hard drives and removable ones were called floppy disks, although nowadays the term 'hard drive' also refers to other storage units such as SSDs and some external drives.

We can say that a hard drive is the secondary storage unit in a PC, unlike what many users might think, which is that it is the primary one; the primary unit is the RAM.

A hard drive is used to save our data even if we disconnect it from the power supply, so it is designed to last over time, whether for a long or short period. Additionally, a hard drive serves as a secondary storage unit where the operating system and our computer files can be stored.

With a hard drive, you can also make backups. Since it is a device that stores data, you can copy photos, videos, documents, and other types of files you want to keep for security, memory, or any other reason, and later retrieve them when they are useful to you. You can connect it using an external interface (such as USB with its corresponding enclosure or adapter), or you can also use it internally in addition to the secondary hard drive you use as your main drive on your computer.
